Why do I receive stripes and when should I receive them?
Stripes are indicators of your progression within a certain belt rank. They are to show your increased understanding and/or proficiency in techniques. Stripes will come to all in time and with continued practice. Many times your instructor is looking for you to improve.
There will be times when your coaches are waiting to see you have one of those “lightbulb” moments when something just clicks for you. Other times they may be waiting to see you apply a movement or concept you have been working on. We are wanting to see you grow in your jiu jitsu journey.
As far as the timing of your stripes is concerned, there are a few components. First is the number of classes- there is a minimum number of classes at each rank to qualify for a stripe. Generally, the first two stripes at any belt are awarded when the number of classes are met. Stripes 3 and 4 are based on the class number, but also on the growth of your understanding and application of your techniques. Also, the coaches may look for you to “solve” a problem you are experiencing in your rolling.
We want you to know as parents or students that it is ok to ask us about your progression. Just be sure to ask, “what is needed to get to the next level” as opposed to “why haven’t I been promoted”. And yes, there is a difference in those questions.
